Despite threats, Bob couldn't save one 'Loser'

Jeremy Britt shows off his Zumba moves on "Biggest Loser."

By Ree Hines

The vacation was over for the contestants of "The Biggest Loser" on Tuesday night. After a week filled with sun and fun in Hawaii, they arrived back on the ranch ready to disprove another common weight-loss excuse in the season of no excuses: "Exercise is boring."

As such, with a whole lot of help from trainers Bob Harper and Dolvett Quince, the gang took on a variety of anything-but-boring workouts.

For instance, Dolvett's former red team of Mark, Buddy, Jeremy and Kim hit a packed Zumba class to show just how exciting a dance-filled fitness routine can be. The group suffered from nerves at first, but Buddy soon showed them the ropes.

"(I figured I) might as well just go for it and try to Zumba from the depths of my soul," he said before doing just that with some hilarious moves. "I even took my glasses off. That's like serious Buddy. We're here, and it's about to get Zumba-licious."

Team Buddy! After all of the negativity from certain players this season -- cough-Conda-cough -- we need more goofy, upbeat antics from Buddy.

As for Bob's bunch, they, too, were far from bored, but they were also far from a fun dance floor. Instead, Bob took Megan, Chris and Conda for an uphill bike ride.

Actually, while Chris and Conda were along for the ride, Bob focused almost exclusively on Megan. With her mom, Kimmy, now out of the game, the veteran "Loser" trainer decided to make Megan his pet project.

Other than the biking, Bob insisted she keep a video diary of all of her solo workouts to ensure she was really doing all of the assigned exercises. He also employed some tough-love motivation during the rest of her workouts -- really tough.

"I better see vomit at the end of this," he shouted before one particularly grueling session. "I swear to God, Megan, I will cut your hair off and kill you if you don't do this."

Um. Some might find that more frightening than anything else, but at least Megan found it motivating -- just not motivating enough.

Despite Bob's best (and worst) efforts and Megan's hard work, she fell short at the weigh-in.

The "Biggest Loser" of the week was Kim, who dropped 7 pounds after acing an earlier challenge that awarded the sort of motivation a trainer just can't offer -- $1,000 for each pound shed. On the other end of the scale was Mark, who didn't lose anything.

With 4 pounds down, Megan fell just above Mark in the stats and just below the yellow line.

The rest of the contestants voted to send her home, but it wasn't really a loss for the ousted player. An update revealed that Megan has since lost even more weight, and she's gained a fianc?.

Do you think Mark should have been voted out for his 0-pound loss, or was Megan the right pick? And what do you think of the new, tougher Bob? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

(AP) ? The United States was the only Western democracy that executed prisoners last year, even as an increasing number of U.S. states are moving to abolish the death penalty, Amnesty International announced Monday.

America's 43 executions in 2011 ranked it fifth in the world in capital punishment, the rights group said in its annual review of worldwide death penalty trends. U.S. executions were down from 46 a year earlier.

"If you look at the company we're in globally, it's not the company we want to be in: China, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq," Suzanne Nossel, executive director of Amnesty International USA, told The Associated Press.

The United States seems deeply divided on the issue.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry was cheered at a Republican presidential candidates' debate last September when he defended his signature on 234 execution warrants over more than 10 years as being the "ultimate justice."

Just weeks later, young people rallied in person and online to protest the execution of Troy Davis in Georgia for the 1991 murder of a police officer. In the intervening years, key witnesses for the prosecution had recanted or changed their stories.

"I think the debate on the issue may be nearing a tipping point in this country," Nossel said. "I think we're seeing momentum at the state level, in the direction of waning support for the death penalty."

Illinois banned the death penalty last year, and Oregon adopted a moratorium on executions.

Maryland and Connecticut are close to banning executions, Amnesty said. And more than 800,000 Californians signed petitions to put a referendum on the state ballot in November that would abolish the death penalty.

However, 34 U.S. states have the death penalty.

Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, which tracks U.S. trends, told the AP that last year 78 prisoners received death sentences, down from an average of more than 300 annually a few years ago. "Executions peaked in 1999 at 98," he added. "By all measures, the death penalty is on the defensive."

Dieter attributed much of the decline to the introduction of DNA testing, which has exposed some mistaken convictions. With stronger defense tactics and appeals processes getting longer, U.S. states also found it more and more expensive to pursue death penalty cases, he said.

The United States was the only member of the G-8 group of developed nations to use the death penalty last year. Japan, which also retains capital punishment, recorded no executions for the first time in 19 years, Amnesty reported.

"Our government has made a very strong point of trying to reassert its position as a standard-bearer on human rights globally," Nossel said. "When other countries look at the United States, the use of the death penalty really stands out a lot in the mind of Europeans and others around the world. We're in such incongruous company."

Mexico strongly protested the July execution in the U.S. of one of its citizens, Humberto Leal, for rape and murder on the grounds that he had not been advised of his rights to receive legal advice and assistance from his consulate. The Vienna Convention on Consular Relations is supposed to guarantee the right of any citizen to consular help.

Leal was one of 51 Mexican men who have been sentenced to death in the United States after being denied consular assistance, Amnesty said. The International Court of Justice had ordered a full review of all these cases after Texas executed another Mexican man in 2008.

The U.S. federal stance on capital punishment was complicated by the Defense Department's announcement that it would seek the death penalty for six foreign nationals detained at the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for trial by military commission. Amnesty contends that military commissions are discriminatory because they do not give foreign citizens the same right to appeal as U.S. courts.

Fate of Obama's ambassador to El Salvador in doubt (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama's ambassador to El Salvador may be heading home at year's end, her diplomatic future undone by old, unfounded rumors that her boyfriend was a Cuban spy and new conservative outrage over a summertime op-ed on gay rights.

Mari Carmen Aponte, a Washington lawyer and Hispanic activist, has served as ambassador in San Salvador since September 2010 after Obama, in response to Republican opposition to her nomination, made her a recess appointee. But her temporary tenure is about to run out and GOP lawmakers are resisting a determined administration effort to secure Senate confirmation.

The opposition stems from questions about Aponte's relationship decades ago with a Cuban-American that scuttled her nomination during the Clinton administration to be ambassador to the Dominican Republic, and a more recent essay she wrote in June to mark Obama's proclamation of gay pride month.

Though the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved her nomination on a 10-9 party-line vote last week, her fate in the full Senate is uncertain with just days left in the legislative session.

"It appears unlikely that all of these Republicans are going to change their mind as far as allowing it to come to a floor vote without a change in attitude about the information," said Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., who is pressing for more details about Aponte. "All of us think we should have an ambassador in El Salvador, but all of us are concerned that we get people who we know are the right people."

The chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. John Kerry, insists Aponte has done a "solid job in her capacity as ambassador now," including helping secure the deployment of Salvadoran troops to Afghanistan to aid in the fight against al-Qaida. "I have not heard of or seen any substantive rationale for her not continuing in this post," Kerry, D-Mass., said at last week's committee meeting.

Ratcheting up the pressure, several members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus planned a news conference Tuesday afternoon to plead with the Senate to confirm Aponte, a Puerto Rican who served on the board at the National Council of La Raza. The caucus has called her "an asset to the Foreign Service and a highly effective advocate for the United States in Central America."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is likely to push for a vote despite GOP efforts to run out the clock on her selection, according to lawmakers and congressional aides.

Conservative anger toward Aponte is based, in part, on an op-ed she wrote June 28 in La Prensa Grafica, a daily newspaper in El Salvador, The essay was in response to a State Department cable to ambassadors worldwide urging them to recognize gay pride month.

In a Spanish-language piece titled, "For the Elimination of Prejudices Wherever They Exist," Aponte wrote: "No one should be subjected to aggression because of who he is or who he loves. Homophobia and brutal hostility are often based on lack of understanding about what it truly means to be gay or transgender. To avoid negative perceptions, we must work together with education and support for those facing those who promote hatred."

In the op-ed, Aponte noted that the United States and El Salvador were among more than 80 nations that had signed a U.N. declaration for the elimination of violence against gays and lesbians. She also pointed out that El Salvador President Mauricio Funes had signed a decree in May 2010 prohibiting discrimination by the government based on sexual orientation.

But 57 percent of El Salvador's population is Roman Catholic, and several Salvadoran family and religious groups wrote to U.S. lawmakers criticizing Aponte for "abusing her diplomatic status, showing a clear disdain concerning our values and cultural identity." They urged lawmakers to oppose her confirmation and suggested she be removed from the post.

DeMint, writing last month in Human Events, assailed Aponte for the op-ed and revived the old speculation about her personal life.

"Our relationship with the Salvadoran people has been one of trust and friendship for decades," DeMint said. "We should not risk that by appointing an ambassador who shows such a blatant disregard for their culture and refuses to clear unsettled doubts about her previous relationships. It's time to bring Ms. Aponte home."

In Aponte's defense, Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., another member of the Foreign Relations Committee, said it was unfair to single her out for an op-ed that was prompted by a State Department missive.

"I really believe what's at stake here is politics more than a real concern about her background," Menendez said in an interview.

Thirteen years ago, when President Bill Clinton nominated Aponte, reports surfaced that a former live-in boyfriend, Roberto Tamayo, had ties to Cuban intelligence in Fidel Castro's regime and that Cuban intelligence agents had tried to recruit her. The head of the Foreign Relations Committee at the time, former Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., signaled he would question Aponte about the allegations at her confirmation hearing; she withdrew her nomination.

In the end, the FBI cleared her. On two occasions, Aponte has received top-secret security clearances.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the allegations were "simply false and unfounded," and Aponte has the full backing of Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Menendez, a Cuban-American, said his opposition to the Castro regime is second to none in the House or Senate and if there were any truth to the rumors about Aponte, he would have opposed her nomination.
